The soft water fishing season is off to a roaring start. We have been busy fishing scouting for trips as well as enjoying time spent with our valuable clients. Starting this week, you will find detailed fishing reports for all of the different bodies of water we fished the previous week. Stop by often for updated reports.
We have spent a couple days fishing Delavan with panfish our primary species targeted. We have found healthy populations of bluegill patrolling the shallow water. If you can find emerging weed growth, you will find bluegills and the occasional perch mixed in. Bluegills have been caught primarily with small ice jigs with a couple of wax worms, Pinks and purples have been the best colors. We have been setting the float a foot above the bait and casting into the shallow weeds. Bass are also shallow as we observed quite a few cruising the shallows. We have not targeted them specifically as of yet, but still catch quite a few while targeting the bluegills. Crappie have pulled out of the shallows but can still be found along breaklines using small plastics and small crappie minnows.
We have been trolling Geneva at night with quite a bit of success targeting walleye. We have been concentrating on 10-12 feet of water running Smithwick Elite 8s and P10s. Marvin and sour grape have been the top colors. If you are able, pick a night with quite a bit of moonlight. Moonlit nights are always better than nights with little or no moonlight.
Fishing on Lake Michigan out of the Port of Milwaukee has been really heating up. The coho salmon are finally starting their migration north. We have been running the standard coho rigs in the top 20 feet of the water column. Mardis Gras peanut flies as well as the black and purple peanuts run behind standard 6” red/orange dodgers have been best. The coho fishing will just get better and better the next couple weeks as more and more fish make it north. Of course, its always a good idea to run some spoons on deeper downriggers for the brown trout and early season kings that have been more present this year.
Best of luck and tight line!
